Australian Visas Under the GSM Category

If you are planning to apply for an Australian visa under the GSM category, it is mandatory for you to undertake the SkillSelect Program. This online process involves two key steps. First, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system. Second, once invited, you can proceed with your actual visa application.

Skilled Independent visa – subclass 189

Skilled Nominated visa – subclass 190

Basic Information to Be Submitted with EOI

Basic Information Required for Submitting an EOI

When submitting your Expression of Interest (EOI) for the General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa, you will need to provide specific information based on the type of visa you are applying for. Below are the essential details required to successfully lodge your EOI:

  1. Personal Information
You must provide your basic personal details, such as your full name, date of birth, nationality, and contact information.

  2. Work Experience Information
You need to include details of your work history, including the roles held, responsibilities, and the duration of employment. It is important that the work experience aligns with your nominated occupation.

  3. Qualification Documents
Submit your educational qualifications, such as degrees, diplomas, or any relevant certifications. These documents should match the requirements for your nominated occupation.

  4. English Language Proficiency
Proof of English proficiency is essential. You may need to provide the results of recognized English language tests such as IELTS or PTE to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively in English.

  5. Skills Assessment Details
A skills assessment is required to validate that your qualifications and work experience meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation. You must provide the report of your successful skills assessment carried out by the designated assessing authority.

Validity of Skills Assessments

If a skills assessment is part of your application, it is crucial to ensure that your assessment remains valid. Skills assessments are generally valid for a period of three years from the date of issue, unless a shorter validity period is specified by the assessing authority.

For the following visas, a skills assessment must be valid at the time of lodgment:

  • Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nominated Scheme (subclass 186) visa

  • Direct Entry stream of the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa

  • Graduate Work stream of the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa

For the following visas, a skills assessment must be valid at the time of invitation and visa application:

  • Skilled – Independent (subclass 189) visa

  • Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190) visa

  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) visa

However, it is important to note that these changes do not apply to the Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457) visa.

Visas That Require Invitation

Certain GSM visa categories require you to receive an invitation to apply after submitting your EOI. These include the following:

  • Business Talent (Permanent) visa (subclass 132)

  • Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188)

  • Skilled Independent (subclass 189)

  • Skilled Nominated (subclass 190)

  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491)
